HUMAN RIGHTS FOR GREAT APES - FIRST TERM

We've done this work in two classes. In the first we've only read the text and we try and understand it and in the second we've done questions about this.
In the text a man talk about human rights for great apes.
At the beginning he tells an embarrased experience, he treated some apes badly. After that, he thinks that apes are a little intelligent and they deserve respect.
Finally, he speaks about a Declaration on Great Apes that has three important rights:

The Right to Life.
The Protection of Individual Liberty.
The Prohibition of Torture.
If you want to read this text, visit this website: http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/node/373

In my opinion, animals deserve respect and we mustn't maltreat them. Besides, we are humans and we mustn't kike seeing to suffer people or animas.
On the other hand, I think that is excessive to do a judgment to decide if an ape go to the jail. I don't believe that we can prevent that apes kill between them, they are only animals.
